President Obama’s Effort to Empower Women and Girls
The marginalization of women and girls has a deep-rooted history. For centuries women have been marginalized and denied equal opportunities to those of their male counterparts. This includes oppression and inequalities in the social, economic and political spheres. Many efforts and movements have raised up over the years to create awareness of the plight of women and to push for change. There has been tremendous progress in empowering and liberating women and girls. Nonetheless, even in the 21st Century, women in the developed and undeveloped economies continue to lug behind and face all forms of marginalization. When President Obama took the reins of power in the year 2009, he was well aware of the plight of women and girls and was determined to make the necessary changes. This article will outline some of president Obama’s effort to empower women and girls during his tenure.
For starters, President Obama’s journey to statehouse was in fact supported by many women who agreed and aligned themselves to his vision. In his private and political life, many women have worked with the former president and been influenced by him. They have equally been absorbed into his administration to support his vision for all the American citizen as well as the marginalized in the society. This is why during his tenure, a very high percentage of women were elected or appointed into his administration. During this time, the former president constituted a council of women that looked into the issues that affected a majority of girls and women and the proposed interventions. As a result, many legislation that favored the promotion of women’s health, equality, fair pay and that which condemned violence against women was signed into law.
In order to empower women and the society at large, the Obama administration pushed for changes in the education system. This was in full realization that when the girl child is empowered in education, they would be able to achieve their goals and aspirations in the future. This started right at the roots in early learning education to higher learning. The Obama administration increased funding in the education sector to provide quality control and increase access to educational opportunities at every level. His administration also addressed specific issues that affected teenage girls and girls of color in secondary and higher education. The interventions included programs that promoted the participation of the girls and protection of their rights.
Specific programs were put in place to address physical and sexual violence against girls in their learning institutions. In addition, the president pushed for congress to enact and reinforce legislation that would clearly address the oppression of women and girls in the judicial system. The comprehensive efforts to prevent the abuse of women was extended to the workplace and homes. Many laws were enacted and reauthorized to combat domestic violence, stalking, child abuse, violation in the military and dating violence to mention but a few. These changes were made both in the judicial system and federal agencies. Their efforts were extended to the international platform through foreign policies that discouraged and prevented human trafficking.
